Remixing an iconic rock group like The Rolling Stones is ballsy and most likely the track will be written off as blasphemy without even a courtesy listen. I’ve given the Soulwax remix of “You Can’t Always Get What You Want” a courtesy listen…and then I played it again, and again.

I’m probably more accepting than the average listener because I love a good remix and don’t feel the need to compare it to the original – for me that’s not what it’s about. A great remix is about creating something new from an existing piece of music, and in this case with a classic song – finding a way to pay homage to its energy so that the true spirit of the song is still in there. Soulwax gives us a shining example. The remix might even out-swagger the original. It’s fresh with the electronic groove and utterly danceable when the beat drops just after the first minute. The well-placed rhythmic samples of the original guitar/chorus/organ tracks is initially surprising and totally brilliant.
