When the Seeqpod site went down a couple weeks ago I figured that was the end. I certainly didn’t have high hopes given the fact that they filed for bankruptcy at the end of March and have an ongoing lawsuit with EMI and Warner Music Group.
If you went to the site it acted like it didn’t even exist – said the server was missing.
Now when you go to the Seeqpod website you see the above image,
Could it be?!?
It appears it could. According to a story posted by Wired on Monday, Seeqpod CEO Kasian Franks is finalizing an acquisition deal with a major media company on par with Google, Apple and Live Nation (though mum is the word for now). Anyone have any guesses? Time Warner? Facebook? Fox/MySpace?
What I don’t understand is, how is Seeqpod any different from sites like The Hype Machine or Blip.fm or the newly discovered We Are Hunted that also aggregate music from blogs and online sources and make it playable? Is it because these sites incorporate links to where the music can be purchased? I would think if that were the case it’d be easy enough to put in a few iTunes and Amazon links to appease the big wigs. Or are they just not garnering enough traffic for it to be worth a major label law suit?
Either way, I applaud Seeqpod for serving music to the masses and hope to see them back up and running soon.
